I keep reading all the reviews for motherboards at major review sites
and they all pick different boards and say wonderful things and then
I go and read user reviews and half of them say they love them and the
other half say no matter what dont buy them they suck !

Oh man, its impossible to pick one !

a) Find a personal recommendation.
b) Take the bloody list of good reviews and buy the product with the most.

I agree.  Asus has a solid reputation excepting their Nforce 4 boards, and that one early Crossfire board.

Any Motherboard with an n-force chipset. Once I left Via and such things got much, much better. The higher the number the better.

All I read over and over and over is ASUS has the worst
support of any company.  And their dual core board doesnt support
IDE except thru the usb.So it scard me off.

I ended up picking the board that was rated highest by maximum PC
and www.motherboards.org which is the EVGA 122-CK-NF68
680i SLI.

Of course it ends up that the board or the bios or something
is filled with problems.  Simple things like the power light doesnt
work, the ethernet ports didnt work if you installed the drivers the
normal way, after a few hours the computer cold boots by itself,
to way worse things that I personally havent experienced like a sata
bug that corrupts data.

I havent had it long enough to say if im truely screwed.
I'll wait till after the holidays to see if the company is able to fix
this stuff.

I HIGHLY recomend the ASUS A8N-SLI Premum Mobo, or the AM2 version of it, depends on the processor you go with. It is bar-none the BEST Mobo around at least within AMD world.  Best feature list all around, including full IDE support (not sure why you need that especially when the board supports 8 SATA ports that can all be spanned in RAID).

I don't know if ASUS customer service is good, bad or exist at all! Their shit works so there is no need for it.

You'll always hear the complaining whiners, most of them don't recognize their ass from a hole in the ground, but its hardly EVER a mobo fault!

Only legit noise may be around BIOS but its true to all manufactures, some less than others (e.g. ASUS). These problems usually get fixed fast if not by the manufacture than by a 3rd party. I make it a habit not to touch the BIOS unless I absolutely have to anyway.

I've only had to use ASUS rma one time and that was on a pentium III 800 mHz board.  cusl2 for those of you that remember those.  It was a quick turn around for me.  The only other issue that I ran across was the lan going out.  No biggie as I wanted to go gigabit anyways.  All other boards have worked splendidly.  I have redone the bios a couple times.  No sweat to upgrade even with the machine running in XP.  My $0.02 worth, and a day late  8O

so basically the verdict on ASUS is: Their RMA sucks, but you rarely have to use it.  So if you get a lemon, you're double-screwed, but if not, you've got something of a golden egg.

I'ev had two asus boards in the past, one amazingly stable, and one that was craptacular, so I can't speak for them either way.  Although the lemon board I got was in the Pentium 2 era.
